According to the Winston-Salem Journal in North Carolina, many elderly people in their 70s and 80s have made it through the economic downturn with their finances relatively intact, only to face the possibility of financial elder abuse or exploitation as they continue to age. Kansas Governor Mark Parkinson signed a bill in May of 2010 imposing a new tax on nursing home beds in hopes of securing additional federal funds. The new law applies a tax of up to $1,950 per nursing home bed, raising approximately $30 million in tax revenues. The federal government would then provide an additional $56 million in Medicaid funds. The entire $86 million would then be distributed back to nursing homes.

Elderly citizens along the Washington-Oregon border are being targeted in a financial scam, according to Oregon Live. The suspect, Michael “Mike” Chermack, about age 50, preys on elderly people by offering to clean their roofs. When his victims agree, Mike causes damages and demands compensation. The most recent case involved an elderly man who lives in Forest Grove, Oregon. Mike offered to clean the moss off the man’s roof, but instead tore down the gutters and demanded $5,000 to fix the damage. When the elderly victim withdrew the sum from …(read more)
Two nursing home aides a the Good Samaritan nursing home in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota are facing a criminal trial for physically and sexually abusing nursing home residents. According to the Star Tribune, the trial of at least one of the aides will be moved from Albert Lea to Olmsted, Rice, Wabasha or Winona County because of the substantial pre-trial publicity.
